Who we are
Menu & Market is an iPhone and iPad app made by Vanderquist (“we”, “us”). The app is offered in the United States, in English. This page explains what information the app and this website use, why, and what you can do about it. Questions go to support@menuandmarket.com.
The short version
- We collect only what we need to run your shared household list: your sign-in details, your household, and the groceries, pantry items, recipes and meal plan you and your household save.
- We do not sell your information. We do not use it for advertising. We do not track you across other apps or websites.
- The app has no advertising tools and no analytics or crash-reporting tools.
- Your calendar events, if you choose to show them in the Plan tab, stay on your iPhone. They are never sent to us.
- You can delete your account inside the app (Household tab, Account, Delete Account).
What we collect, and why
Account and sign-in
- Sign in with Apple: an identifier for your Apple Account, and the name and email address Apple shares with us. If you choose Apple’s “Hide My Email”, we only receive Apple’s private relay address.
- Sign in with email: the email address you type, and the one-time 6-digit code we send to it. The code is sent by an email provider that acts on our behalf (see “Who helps us run the service” below).
- Why: to sign you in and to connect you to your household.
Your name in the household
A display name that other members of your household see. If you start the household, you type it. If you join with an invite code, it starts from your Apple name, or from the first part of your email address.
Your household
The household’s name, who belongs to it (by display name), and the invite codes you create. An invite code is random, can be used once, and expires after 7 days. We use this so the people you invite see the same list you do.
What you and your household save
Grocery items (name, amount, category, store, whether checked off, and whether it was added by hand, by Siri, or from a recipe), pantry items, recipes (title, ingredients, steps, notes, and the web link and site name if you imported it), your meal plan and cooking history, and your store layouts and custom categories. This is the service itself. It is stored so that everyone in the household sees the same thing on every device.
Menu & Market Plus
If your household has Plus, we store whether it is active, which household member subscribed, the trial and renewal dates, and the Apple transaction identifiers for that subscription. Apple handles the purchase and your payment. We receive your subscription status from Apple, and we never see your card number or other payment details.
Technical information
When your phone syncs, our service providers’ servers see your IP address and the usual details of a network request. This is used to deliver and secure the service.
What stays on your phone only
- Calendar events and your choice of which calendars to show (the optional calendar view in Plan). The app reads them with your permission, never changes them, and never uploads them.
- Cooking timers, timer notifications and alarms. These are local to your phone. The app does not use push notifications from a server.
- A working copy of your household’s data, so the app works offline. Signing out removes it from the device.
- Small display choices, such as how you sort your list.
What we do not collect
Your location, contacts, photos, health information, advertising identifier, or browsing history. The app has no analytics or tracking tools. We do not record your voice.
Siri
When you ask Siri to add something, Apple handles your voice under Apple’s own privacy policy. Menu & Market only receives the words of the item and adds it to your household’s list. On a locked iPhone, Siri asks you to unlock it first.
Importing a recipe from a link
When you paste a recipe link, your phone (not our servers) downloads that web page directly from the website and reads the recipe on your phone. The website sees your phone’s request, as it would if you visited it yourself. We send no cookies or sign-in with it, and we remove tracking parameters from the link before using it. If you save the recipe, it is stored like any other recipe, with the link kept as its source. If you tap “Open Page”, the website opens in an in-app Safari view and that website’s own privacy policy applies.
Where your information is stored, and who helps us run the service
We use a small number of service providers. They process your information only to run the service for us.
- Supabase hosts our database, sign-in and server functions. It is hosted in the United States.
- PowerSync is the sync service that copies your household’s data to your devices. It is hosted in the United States.
- Resend is the email provider that delivers sign-in codes if you sign in with email. It processes your email address only to send you the code.
- Apple provides Sign in with Apple, Siri, and the App Store, which handles Plus payments. If you opt in to share app analytics or crash reports with developers in your iPhone settings, Apple may give us anonymous reports.
- This website is hosted by Vercel, which receives standard request details, such as your IP address, to serve the page. The website itself uses no trackers or cookies.
Your data travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Our database rules let only the members of a household read that household’s data.
Sharing
- Everyone in your household sees the household’s list, pantry, recipes, plan and each other’s display names. That is the point of a shared household.
- We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for advertising.
- We do not read your household’s content except to fix a problem you ask us to help with, to keep the service secure, or to follow the law.
- If the app is ever sold or merged with another business, your information may move with it, and we would tell you first.
If you connect an AI assistant
Connecting an AI assistant is optional and is off unless you set it up. If you do, you sign in on our consent page and approve its access to your household. The assistant can then read your household’s recipes, ingredients, recipe groups, the items on your shopping list, and what your pantry shows you have on hand. It can add or change recipes, meal plans, list items and groups only after it shows you a preview and you confirm. What it reads is sent to the assistant you connected, and that provider’s privacy policy applies to it. You can disconnect it at any time in that assistant’s settings.
How long we keep it, and deleting your account
We keep your information while your account is active.
To delete your account: open the Household tab, scroll to Account, and tap Delete Account. For safety you type DELETE, then confirm it is you with Sign in with Apple or, if you signed in with email, with the code we email you.
What happens:
- If other people are in your household: you leave it. Your account, sign-in information and display name are deleted. Groceries, recipes and other items you added stay with the household, and they are no longer connected to you (they carry only a random code).
- If you are the last person in the household: the household and everything saved in it are deleted too. The app tells you this before you confirm.
- If you used Sign in with Apple, we also ask Apple to revoke the app’s access to your Apple Account.
- We keep a minimal technical record that a deletion happened, made of random identifiers only (no name or email), so that an interrupted deletion can be completed safely.
- Backups: we keep daily backups for 7 days, so deleted data is gone from backups within 7 days.
Your subscription is separate. Deleting your account does not cancel a Plus subscription. Apple bills you, so cancel in Settings > your name > Subscriptions first. If you subscribed, the app reminds you.
Signing out removes the household’s working copy from that device. It does not delete your account.
Can’t use the app? Email support@menuandmarket.com from the email address on your account and we will delete your account within 30 days.
Your choices and rights
- You can change or delete what you saved at any time in the app.
- You can turn off calendar and notification access in your iPhone’s Settings.
- You can ask us what we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it, by emailing support@menuandmarket.com.
- We do not “sell” or “share” personal information as those terms are used in California law.
Children
Menu & Market is a household tool for adults and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has an account, email us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date above, and for significant changes we will say so in the app or by email.
